Southern Blast is a cinematic celebration of the wild landscapes, abundant marine ecosystems, and coastal communities that call Australia’s Southern Ocean coastlines home.

Featuring footage shot on location in lutruwita (Tasmania), the film connects with local personalities—from surfers to crayfishers, sustainable ocean businesses, and Traditional Custodians—offering a glimpse into the diverse communities that coexist with marine life and wild landscapes. Southern Blast tells a story of natural beauty set against the looming threat of oil and gas development along Australia’s southern coastline, endangering a unique coastal lifestyle and deeply connected ocean cultures.

Engaging as it is visually powerful, Southern Blast captures the raw wildness of the Southern Ocean and the people whose lives, livelihoods, and identities are inseparable from it. The film delivers a clear and uncompromising message: this region must be protected, and collective action is essential to prevent oil and gas exploitation in these waters.

Why we need your help...

At the time of filming, the proposed seismic blasting area covered 7.7 million hectares. That campaign was successfully defeated. However, this same area—excluding the South Australian section—has now re-emerged under the new 2025 Otway Basin acreage release, despite long-standing opposition from our coastal communities who have been fiercely opposed to any oil and gas projects in the Southern Ocean.
